We at Fieldstone believe that "a comprehensive education in music significantly enhances overall creativity and academic development of our students."
The rudiments of Fieldstone's Global Knowledge curriculum comes from the work of professor E.D. Hirsh Jr. from the University of Virginia. He concluded that a broad and deep knowledge base allows children to be culturally literate.
The appreciation, knowledge, and skill base of music comprises part of the foundation of knowledge base Hirsh determined was so vastly important. Throughout history, music has been one of the most universal, essential, and enduring of human endeavors and therefore, in order for someone to have a true Global Knowledge, they must possess a knowledge base, understanding and appreciation for music.
We strive to instill a deep respect and understanding for all aspects of music. This includes learning theory, performing and listening to many forms of music. There are also numerous performance opportunities helps improve self-esteem, build confidence and give students opportunities for self-expression and creativity.
Orff (Grade K-3)
The goal of the Orff Music for Children Programme is to develop each child's musical literacy, understanding and creative potential.
The basic elements of music - rythmn, melody, dynamics, phrasing and form - are experienced by each child through activities involving singing, movement and dance, speech, listening and instrument playing.
The objective of each lesson is to achieve mastery in a particular musical activity.
Suzuki Based Approach (Grades K-3)
The Suzuki method is used to instruct very young students on stringed instruments. This Programme is recognized as a major force in music education today.
The aim is to nurture creativity, sensitivity and self-esteem.
"any child who is properly trained can develop music ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue".
Choral (Grades K-3)
Students in each grade are instructed in the various components of vocal/choral instruction culminating in class presentations at assemblies and school-wide music nights. The students have opportunities to audition for co-curricular choirs. Students will be singing in the traditional languages of classical vocal music: French, Italian and German.
Performance Opportunities
Regular student and guest performances in assemblies.
School-Wide Music Nights presenting Music from all students.
Music Appreciation
All students begin their school day with fifteen minutes of Music Appreciation. Students listen to new pieces daily and steadily progress through the history of music. Students learn about types of musical compositions, time periods, instrument families and composers. Discussions with the homeroom teachers and music staff promote the appreciation and learning of classical music.
