Beginning with the classes of 2007 and 2008,
Fieldstone Upper School students will have an opportunity to earn a parallel Diploma in addition to their Ontario Secondary School Diplomas (OSSD). The Global Knowledge Upper School Diploma bridges the ideals of Fieldstone's Global Knowledge K-8 curriculum with the requirements of the OSSD.
The Diploma will also challenge Upper School students to foster their leadership skills and become increasingly involved in the school community as well as the community at large.
The requirements of the Diploma are as follows:
Completion (within a student's Upper School career) of four optional courses chosen from among the Global Knowledge Diploma selections. These courses will be selected based on their connection to the Cultural Literacy spirit that drives Fieldstone's K-8 curriculum. For the 2004-2005 academic year, the Global Knowledge course selections include the following:
Latin, Level 1, Academic
World Religions: Beliefs, Issues, and Religious Traditions, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
Completion (within a student's Upper School career) of at least 60 hours of Community Service involvement in any environment outside of the Fieldstone community.
Completion (within a student's Upper School career) of at least 20 hours of School Service within the Fieldstone community (assisting with Open Houses and FPA initiatives, peer tutoring, organizing dances and other events).
Collection (within a student's Upper School career) of at least 6 leadership/participation points. Points can be earned by participating in school athletic, leadership or artistic endeavours. In the case of athletics, points will be awarded for both playing and non-playing (manager, etc.) participation and in the case of arts, behind-the-scenes participation will be rewarded on a par with performing.
Students who achieve all of the above requirements will receive both their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and their Fieldstone Global Knowledge Upper School Diploma on Graduation Day in June.
Students who choose to pursue this unique diploma will take advantage of all that the Fieldstone Upper School has to offer. These young leaders and scholars will receive not only the diploma as a tangible reward for their efforts, but also innumerable intangible results that they will carry with them to university and beyond.
