CHARACTER COUNTS

We truly believe that Character Counts! at Fieldstone.
We are essentially a family, and rely on one another for personal safety, security of our belongings, personal and social growth, alongside our intellectual development. By being a person of character, we improve the lives of all at Fieldstone, and make it possible to fulfill individual and classroom goals.
Our Character Counts! programme teaches values that are clear and unequivocal.

* There are enduring, universal moral truths - principles of thought and conduct - which    distinguish right from wrong and define the essence of good character.
* Character REALLY DOES COUNT! In personal relationships, in school, and in the    workplace in life. Who you are makes a difference.
* Character is not hereditary, nor does it develop automatically. It must be consciously    developed by example and demand by peers, faculty and parents.

This programme has found that there are at least six values that should be taught to all children. These are known as the "Six Pillars of Character" and include:

1. Trustworthiness
2. Respect
3. Responsibility
4. Fairness
5. Caring
6. Citizenship

Through the year students are taught these pillars in their classes and are given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned. Assemblies are used to help teach the students about each pillar, it's importance, and what it truly means.

Special Character Assemblies are held to recognize individuals displaying good character. In addition, students can work through a set of tasks to earn character pins for each pillar.

Parents will also find a "Character Profile" in each formal report card where students are asked to reflect on their progress in each of the pillars.

Lessons of integrity, personal responsibility and compassion must be taught by personal example. That is the hard part. At Fieldstone we are committed to creating an environment where it is safe to be "of good character" and where teachers support and reward good behaviour. We ask parents for support and encouragement with this programme, if it is to be truly effective. As role models, we must all take advantage of those "teachable moments" with regards to character, and continue to value being a good person above all else.
